Man talks about brother's suspicious death

Posted: Updated:
BESSEMER - AL -

The fraternal twin of the man whose remains were found in a well in Bessemer spoke with ABC 33/40.

Joel Harris says he bought the house on Bell Street for his brother John Edward Harris back in the 1990's. He says in December of 1999, his mother called him and asked him if he had seen John. The Harris family filed a missing persons report at the time and they never heard anything back.

Last month, the current owner of the house discovered an inactive well underneath the house. She became curious and climbed down in the well and found the remains. Police identified the remains as that of John Edward Harris. Joel Harris says he never saw the well underneath the house. He says his brother told him about it. After his disappearance, he sold the house. Harris says his family appreciates the woman who climbed into the well. He says the family has closure, they don't know what happened to him but at least they know where he is now. Harris say that's a comfort for them. He also wants to say thank you to the woman who climbed down into the well.

Harris says police are telling the family his brother's death is under suspicion circumstances. Harris says Bessemer police has been great about keeping the family up to date with information. He says his brother's remains will be cremated. He plans to come back to Alabama soon and have a memorial service for his brother along with his two nephews. John Harris had two sons. Harris says his brother loved to fish so they will probably put his remains in the river and set him free.
