Thanksgiving travel period deadly crashes

Posted: Updated:

Most people are back to work after traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday travel period.  Alabama State Troopers investigated eight fatal traffic crashes that resulted in 11 deaths during the 102-hour holiday travel period between 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 27 and midnight Sunday, December 1.  The eight fatal crashes occurred in Russell, Madison, Crenshaw, Walker, Autauga, Barbour, Pickens and Talladega counties.

According to preliminary investigation, alcohol was a factor in at least three of the deadly incidents.  State Troopers report seven of the 11 people killed in those crashes were not using seat belts at the time of the accident.

The numbers are up from last year.  During the same holiday travel period in 2012, troopers investigated five traffic deaths.
