The Birmingham City Council has elected a new president.

Councilor Johnathan Austin was named to the leadership role Tuesday after winning a vote 5-4 over fellow Councilor Steven Hoyt.

Members of the city council who voted for Austin included Marcus Lundy, Kim Rafferty, Valerie Abbott and William Parker. Austin voted for himself, giving him the edge over Hoyt.

Councilors Jay Roberson, Lashunda Scales and Sheila Tyson voted for Hoyt, who like Austion, also voted for himself.

News of the Austin being elected to the position prompted Alabama Congresswoman Terri Sewell to release the following statement:

"I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulation to Birmingham City Councilor Johnathan Austin on being elected as the Council's new President. Council President Austin is a remarkable and dynamic public servant who has a strong record of working to enhance the wellbeing of Birmingham's residents. Through his work to expand Birmingham's technological infrastructure, protect the local environment, increase the city's bike lanes, and improve public health, Council President Austin has given our city much to be proud of. I know the City of Birmingham will be well-served under his leadership.

Roberson decided to keep his President Pro Tem seat.
