Chief Meteorologist James Spann discusses the recent "gloomy" weather, the potential for snow in Alabama and the forecast for Thanksgiving, Black Friday and the Iron Bowl Saturday via the ABC 33/40 Weather Blog.

IS THERE SUCH A WEATHER TERM AS "GLOOMY" WEATHER?

If not, we can use that term today because from the first crack of dawn this morning until mid-afternoon today, it has been a wet and gloomy day. Don't know how much rain has occurred but we will get some numbers later, but literally waves of low clouds and rain swept from southwest to northeast across much of the state and dumped a lot of rain. My guess is that many communities in Northwest and West Alabama and even in the Birmingham area, probably got between 1.50 and 3.00 inches of rain.

A BIG WEATHER EVENT:

Graphic from NWS Birmingham showing the timing of possible winter weather in Alabama Tuesday night.

SNOW TONIGHT:

We have been watching the upper low near Houston with great interest, snow has been reported in places like Huntsville, Texas, and even some of the northern suburbs of Houston. We will see the dynamic cooling associated with that feature late tonight, and with cold air advection confidence is high we will see a little snow across Alabama. Here is our thinking, pretty much in line with forecasts we have issued in recent days.

TIMING:

The greatest chance of snow over North and Central Alabama will come from about 11:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. A few spots might see a flake or two as early as 10:00. Most people will sleep right through this event.

THANKSGIVING DAY:

We will be very cold early Thursday morning; the GFS model is printing a low of 21 degrees for Birmingham, and the colder places will easily reach the teens. But, the day will be bright and sunny with a high in the mid-40s.

BLACK FRIDAY:

We start the day in the 20s; the high will be in the low 50s with a sunny sky.

IRON BOWL FORECAST:

For Saturday's big game at Jordan-Hare Stadium (2:30p CT kickoff), the sky should be mostly sunny with temperatures falling from the mid-50s at kickoff to near 50 by the final whistle. There is no chance of rain.

OUR WEEKEND:

After being dry all day Saturday, we will have a slight chance of showers Sunday and a better chance Sunday night and Monday. The rain total for those two days should be nearly one inch.
