Hands on Birmingham, American Red Cross team up to prepare and share

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Are you and your family ready in the event of a natural disaster?

Saturday, Hands On Birmingham and The American Red Cross partnered up in an effort to get parents and children together to prepare disaster kits in the event of an emergency.

Hundreds of people participated throughout the day at different locations in the Magic City.

Families who registered were asked to bring some preparedness items, such as blankets, water, food, flashlights, batteries and hygiene products, to the event. The Red Cross provided bags for both the family's kit and the kit they are donating to a family in need.

The Red Cross will keep the donated kits and distribute them to those in need throughout the community.

Organizers say it's important to serve, to volunteer and to be aware.

"Whenever disasters or things come about, it's always important to be prepared," Mauri Robinson with Hands on Birmingham, said. "So, we want to educate families on how to do that."

"It's so fortunate that these families came out to help and to also give back to the community, but to also make sure that they're prepared for themselves and their children," Red Cross Volunteer Development Specialist, Whitney Somerville, said.

The Red Cross responds to 70,000 disasters per year throughout the country. By participating in Saturday's activity, families are equipping themselves and others with the necessary skills that can make all the difference in the event of an emergency.
