ADEM accepts community input on proposed Attalla landfill

Posted: Updated:

People opposed to a proposed landfill in Attalla have until Thursday to submit complaints.

The owner of 200 acres on the north side of town near Sand Valley Road wants to use about a fourth of the land for a disposal site.  The proposal states the landfill would accept up to 275 tons each day.

Some neighbors expressed concerns about smell, safety, and property values.  There are questions about traffic along the rural road, as well as uncertainties about the environmental impact.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management held a public hearing last week to listen to grievances.  The ADEM representatives said only "technical comments concerning environmental matters" would have an impact on their consideration of whether or not to approve the landfill.

Attalla mayor Larry Means said before the hearing, "I would hope that ADEM, the way they do things, that they do listen to public sentiment.  And if public sentiment sounds like it is not for this, then I hope they would consider that before they give a permit."

You can submit your concerns by email to hearing.officer@adem.state.al.us or mail a letter to:
