Duggar Mountain Wilderness fire believed to be almost over

Posted: Updated:
PIEDMONT - AL -

Firefighters say a blaze in the Duggar Mountain Wilderness might be entering its final phase.

Forestry Service spokesman, Bobby Kitchens, says the fire is affecting about 529 acres, which is within a 566 acre containment area.

Investigators say the blaze might have started earlier this week from a campfire that was not extinguished. Dry weather and fall leaves helped spread the flames.

About 60 firefighters are trying to put out the fire by extinguishing heat sources near the fire line.

The Pinhoti Trail is closed within the wilderness area.

Hikers can reroute onto Forest Service Road 500 and County Road 55.
