Your Health: November 15, 2013 Caffeine, coffee and sleep

That cup of coffee may pick you up in the afternoon only to let you down later.
      New research indicates that afternoon pick-me-up may lead to a sleepless night.
      Sleep experts at the Henry Ford Sleep Disorders and Research Center in Detroit conducted a small study using caffeine pills containing the same amount of the stimulant as found in two to three cups of coffee.
       They learned that taking in caffeine even as long as six hours before bedtime disrupts sleep.
       Researchers say study participants lost more than one hour of sleep during the night.
      The findings in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine suggests people should try to avoid caffeine after 5 p.m. if they want to get a good night's sleep.
