Wildfire Burns More Than 300 Acres In Talladega National Forest

Posted: Updated:

Crews are fighting a wildfire in Talladega National Forest. So far the wildfire has burned 319 acres in the Dugger Mountain Wilderness.

Shoal Creek Ranger, Bobby Kitchens says, "We're expecting the wildfire to gain more acres, but we do have a plan for containment."

Kitchens says the wildfire was discovered Sunday and expects it to continue to burn for several days. Right now at least 50 firefighters and support staff are fighting the wildfires.

The Pinhoti Trail, north of Pinky Burns Trail Head is closed all the way to Forest Service Road 500. Officials say the wildfire is creating lots of smoke and drivers should use caution on surrounding highways.

The cause of the wildfire has yet to be determined. But Shoal Creek Rangers say they believe someone started the fire.
