With little emotion on his face, 16-year-old Travis Montgomery appeared before a Marion County judge for the first time since being charged in the stabbing death of his mother.

Along with the murder of his mother, Montgomery is also accused of stabbing his father -- Samuel Wade Montgomery -- who remains in critical condition at UAB Hospital.

Investigators with the Marion County Sheriff's Office are still trying to determine what provoked Montgomery to commit such a violent, heinous crime against his own parents, though, they say the Phillips High School sophomore was at odds with his mother.

"He was really upset at his mother," said Sheriff Kevin Williams of Marion County. "Some issues that happened in the past and we're trying to get out what those issues are."

Family and friends admit the teenager dealt with emotional issues, and a judge has since ordered a mental evaluation of Montgomery.

"He was a typical teenager. Some minor problems. Nothing big. I've been one on one with him scolding him and so forth...no nothing like this," one friend said.

"He would get pretty made sometimes and not wanna talk about stuff.  He would have an expression about him.  I would try to help him out. It was hard when he was angry," said Kolby Thrasher, a friend of Montgomery's.

Due to the nature of the crime, Montgomery was not allowed bond. It is unknown at this time when he'll make his next court appearance.
