Braves leaving Turner Field, will build new stadium to open in 2017

ATLANTA - GA -

The Atlanta Braves are leaving Turner Field.

The teams announced Monday it will not seek another 20-year lease.  Instead, it will move into a new 42,000-seat, $672 million stadium complex in Cobb County in 2017.  The stadium will be part of a 60-acre development near Cobb Galleria mall.

The infrastructure at Turner Field was originally built for the 1996 Summer Olympics before being converted to a baseball park that opened in 1997.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said there was no way the Braves were going to stay in downtown without city taxpayers spending hundreds of millions of dollars.   In a statement, he said that the city was unwilling to match an offer put together by nearby Cobb County given the needs facing Atlanta.

Reed said he had already spoken with a number of unspecified groups about redeveloping the downtown stadium and surrounding area.
