Jefferson County asks for two lawsuits to be dismissed

JEFFERSON COUNTY - AL -

Jefferson County officials are seeking dismissal of two lawsuits by sewer customers as part of the county's plan to emerge from bankruptcy.

U. S. Bankruptcy Court Judge, Thomas Bennett, must approve those settlements, which are at the center of the bankruptcy exit plan.

Both lawsuits challenge the validity of the county's refinancing of sewer debt from a decade ago, which led to large increases in debt and higher rates for customers.

Jefferson County attorneys filed a court motion last week requesting a judge to throw out the lawsuits. Attorneys for the plaintiffs in both cases say they oppose having the suits dismissed.

Friday marked two years since Jefferson County entered into bankruptcy. Jefferson County Commission President, David Carrington, said this week he is hopeful with the debt's new "BBB" rating, the county will be able to sell the debt within two weeks.
