HOOVER - AL -

Saturday marks the 238th birthday of the Marine Corps.

The newest Marine Corps League detachment in Alabama had a charter signing ceremony for the new Hoover-Shelby County League.

After six months of planning, Lt. Gen. Brute Krulak's detachment is official.

Krulak is a retired commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps and the current president of Birmingham Southern College.

Saturday new members were inducted, including Birmingham Marine, Lance Corporal Jessica Rafferty, who is the daughter of Birmingham Councilwoman, Kim Rafferty.

"People who've gotten out of the Marine Corps and still love it," Rafferty said. "Like, it really shows that these people who are still here love the Corps, they are dedicated to our Corps then and now. I think it's a big deal that they got the charter and a big deal that it's named after Brute Krulak. He's definitely quite an amazing man."

The Marine Corps major function is to help Marines and their families. This league says they are also very active with charitable organizations.
