FDA to ban artery-clogging trans fats

Posted: Updated:

The FDA announced Thursday that it will require the food industry to gradually phase out trans fats because they are threat to people's health.

Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said the move could prevent negative health consequences such as 20,000 heart attacks a year and 7,000 deaths.  The amount of trans fats in the country's diet declined dramatically in the last decade, but Hamburg said they "remain an area of significant public health concern."

Trans fat is widely considered the worst kind of fat for your heart. They are often found in processed foods, including some microwave popcorns and frozen pizzas, refrigerated doughs and ready-to-use frostings.

Right now, there is no timeline set for the phase-out.  The FDA will collect comments for two months before determining how long it will take.
