Leeds Elementary School teaches learning at early age

Posted: Updated:

A pilot program at Leeds Elementary School is teaching students how to read at an early age.

The school offers training to Pre-K teachers in the area. It's in partnership with the state's highly successful reading initiative, ARI.

ARI seeks to improve reading instruction and reach 100 percent literacy among public school students.

"We, actually had so many [people] wanting to attend today because this is a pilot program that we had to limit the number of participants," Lisa Shaddix said. "So, we're excited about the growth that this program can bring. The training, the professional development that teachers will be a part of in learning the best practice instructions for our four-year-olds."

The pilot program is the result of a School Readiness Grant.
