Etowah County Sheriff: Felony warrant roundup yields 43 arrests

ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. -- As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, 43 people have been arrested on 60 warrants in Etowah County Sheriff's Office Drug Enforcement Unit's "Operation Sunrise," authorities said.

The drug task force is being assisted in the operation by 11 other law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service, in an effort to reduce felony and misdemeanor warrants in the county. Around 50 law enforcement officers, broken down into four teams, participated in the roundup.

According to a release, 95 percent of the warrants being served are for felony crimes, and since 5 a.m., small quantities of marijuana have been seized, along with approximately 1 1/2 pounds of methamphetamine. 

Authorities started the day with over 200 warrants for 150 individuals.

"The large majority of these individuals are repeat offenders," Sheriff Todd Entrekin said.  "We are doing our best to keep these criminals in jail in an effort to make our communities safer."

The sheriff's office is encouraging people who are aware of outstanding warrants to surrender to law enforcement.

Etowah County Drug Enforcement Unit, Etowah County Sheriff's Office, Joint Special Operations Group, United States Marshals Service Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, Federal Bureau of Investigation Safe Streets Task Force, Attalla Police Department, Gadsden Police Department, Glencoe Police Department, Hokes Bluff Police Department, Rainbow City Police Department, Southside Police Department and the Etowah County District Attorney's Office.
