People protest changing lyrics to traditional Christmas song

Posted: Updated:

Who hasn't sung the words to the traditional Christmas song, Deck the Halls! Bet you know the words by heart - Deck the Halls with boughs of holly, falalalala lalalala. Tis the season to be jolly, falalalala lalalala. Don we now our gay apparel...

That is correct, unless you read the words on the new Hallmark Keepsake Christmas ornament. The ornament is a Christmas sweater showing the words to the song. Except, there is something different. The word gay has been replaced with the word fun. Hallmark is taking a beating over its decision!

Hallmark defended the move by saying, "When the lyrics to 'Deck the Halls' were translated from Gaelic and published in English back in the 1800's, the word 'gay' meant festive or merry,  today it has multiple meanings, which we thought could leave our intent open to misinterpretation."

A lot of people on Facebook and Twitter didn't accept the change well. In fact, it appears to have backfired. Gays and heterosexuals were offended.

Hallmark will continue to sell the ornament for $12.95 on its company website.
