A routine traffic stop on an 18-wheeler that made an illegal lane change led to the seizure of 490 pounds of marijuana, Birmingham police announced at an impromptu news conference Tuesday.

According to police, the truck was stopped by officers after it was seen making an illegal lane change while traveling eastbound on Interstate 20/59 shortly before noon. The trucker, who hasn't been charged, pulled over near the Birmingham airport and after a search of the trailer, officers discovered nine duffle bags full of weed. The truck, which was en route to Maine, was also hauling squash.

Authorities say the driver didn't try to hide the illegal contents, which has a street value of nearly half a million dollars.

An investigation remains ongoing.
