Back to class after concussions

Posted: Updated:

There is now a new set of guidelines to help parents, teachers, and coaches get a child with a concussion back in the classroom.

The new clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a gradual transition. If symptoms are mild or tolerable, parents may consider sending their child to school - maybe with some adjustments. But if the symptoms are severe enough the child may need to be kept home from school and required to make a gradual transition back to class. The AAP recommends a collaborative approach to help the student-athlete recover.

The complete list of guidelines are available online in the journal "Pediatrics."
