STANFORD'S STATEMENT

Don't count Stanford out of the Pac-12 race just yet.

The Cardinal's physical ground game and dominant defense — which disappeared in a loss at Utah last week — showed they can still shut down new-age offenses the old-fashioned way.

Tyler Gaffney ran for 171 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 13 Stanford smothered Brett Hundley and No. 9 UCLA 24-10 with a physical performance on both sides of the ball.

Kevin Hogan threw for 227 yards and a spectacular touchdown to Kodi Whitfield as the Cardinal (6-1, 4-1) regrouped the way they always seem to over the past four years. Stanford has not lost consecutive games since October 2009.

The Bruins entered the game averaging 45.8 points per game. That ranked second in the Pac-12 behind Oregon, which hosts UCLA next week before traveling to North Division rival Stanford on Nov. 7 in matchups that will likely decide the Pac-12's championship game.

RISING TIGERS

Another ranked opponent down for Missouri.

Maty Mauk threw for 295 yards in his first career start and Andrew Baggett converted five field goals to help the No. 14 Tigers defeat No. 22 Florida 36-17 and open a two-game lead in the Southeastern Conference East Division.

With James Franklin watching on the sideline in street clothes, Mauk put any doubts to rest about whether he was ready on the first play of the game with a 41-yard pass to L'Damian Washington and then a 20-yard toss to Bud Sasser for a 7-0 lead 22 seconds in.

Missouri outgained the Gators 500-151 and became the first conference opponent in 14 games to score at least 21 points against them. The Tigers bullied Florida at the line of scrimmage, sacking quarterback Tyler Murphy six times and flushing him out of the pocket throughout the game.

The Tigers knocked off their second consecutive ranked opponent for the first time since 1973 and will face No. 11 South Carolina next week at home.

STRANGE HOMECOMING

Grambling's decision not to travel to Jackson State for a football game did not stop the homecoming festivities on the Mississippi campus.

The music was blaring, the barbecue roasting and good times were all around outside of Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday morning.

The game between Grambling and Jackson State was canceled and declared a forfeit on Friday after disgruntled Grambling players refused to travel from their Louisiana campus because of issues they have with leaders of the athletic department and the university.

The football team has been through two coaching changes this season. Doug Williams was fired after just two games and interim coach George Ragsdale was replaced by Dennis "Dirt" Winston on Thursday.

Grambling football players reportedly walked out of a contentious meeting with administration on Tuesday because of differences on how the program should be run. Players skipped practice on Wednesday and Thursday and then didn't make the 2 1/2-hour trip to Jackson on Friday.
