Double Springs man, 37, charged with capital murder for slayings of aunt, nephew in Winston County

A Double Springs man has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting deaths of a woman and her nephew earlier this month, according to arrest records obtained by ABC 33/40.

Shannon Edward Payne, 37, was arrested on two counts of capital murder shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday at a home located at 23797 County Road 41 in Addison. According to the arrest report, Payne was charged "based on evidence gathered and information given to the Winston County Sheriff's Office of Investigations and with the assistance of the Alabama Bureau of Investigation."

According to the arrest warrants, Payne allegedly used a rifle to gun down both 80-year-old Maxine Carroll and 50-year-old Bryan Stephens, who were found dead Oct. 8 in Carroll's home in the Upshaw community of Winston County.

Payne is being held in the Winston Co. Jail without bond.
