The Blount County Coroner's Office has confirmed a 17-year-old girl died Thursday night from an injury sustained during a private soccer practice.

According to the coroner, the victim was participating in a co-ed practice around 6 p.m. when she suffered a fatal injury, blunt force trauma to the chest, in an accidental collision with a male player.

Both players were competing for the ball and didn't have sight of each, which ultimately led to both players colliding. The girl took a direct blow to her sternum from the boy's head and she immediately collapsed.

The girl was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. Her death has been ruled accidental and there are no plans for an autopsy.
