Birmingham-area fire captain name Firefighter of the Year for heroic rescue

Posted: Updated:

Birmingham firefighters were honored for their heroism at a ceremony Thursday, including a captain who was named Firefighter of the Year.

Captain Roderick Moore was selected from a field of six honorees for his efforts to rescue a man trapped in the rear of a burning vehicle, suffering minor burns along the way. The veteran firefighter started his 27-year career as a recruiter at Station 9, where he now serves as its captain.  This is the second time in just two weeks that Captain Moore was selected as Firefighter of the Year.

"It makes me feel good, like I'm doing my job, and being recognized for doing a good job," Moore said.

Estelle Smith, Birmingham Area Insurance Professional President said, "This started in 1950, when we were a new organization. We've always been please to recognize the firefighter of the year for his heroic actions. So it's really a tradition."

This is the 54th annual event honoring firefighters, hosted by the Birmingham Area Insurance Professionals and Birmingham Independent Insurance agents. Captain Moore received a plaque and $500 dollars for his bravery.
