The New York Police Department is investigating after a Norman Rockwell painting was discovered missing from a Queens storage facility. The 1939 painting recently sold at auction, by a private collector from Birmingham, for $1 million. The oil painting titled "Sport," depicts a fisherman wearing a yellow rain jacket and smoking a pipe. It was auctioned at Sotheby's in New York on May 22nd. Police didn't identify the Alabama seller ot the new owner.
Police say it disappeared last month from Welpak Art Moving and Storage in Ridgewood, Queens. Welpak has not responded to questions, but says on its website that it offers high-quality security and a variety of fine art shipping and climate-controlled services.
