UPDATE: Crews move contaminated soil from a Birmingham park to landfill

Posted: Updated:

Crews hired by the city of Birmingham removed piles of lead-contaminated dirt near Birmingham's Maclin Park Wednesday. They told ABC 33/40 the dirt was being moved to a landfill in Trussville.

The dirt was removed from the park's infield more than a month ago. Since then, the park has been closed, leaving many residents in the Collegeville area with more questions than answers.

The City Council approved a $35,000 legal contract last week to investigate how the dirt got inside the park. Sources tell reporter Marissa Mitchell they believe a third-party contractor brought in the dirt.

Tune in for more details on this exclusive report on ABC 33/40 at 5 p.m.
