WASHINGTON - DC -
U.S. Lawmakers missed a midnight deadline to pass a budget and avert a partial government shutdown. House Republicans demanded the Senate negotiate their demand for a one year delay on the Affordable Health Care Act, but the Democratic Senate twice rejected GOP Demands.
An estimated 800,000 federal workers face furloughs. National parks and most federal offices will close.
Military personnel will still remain on duty. President Barack Obama addressed troops in a video message ensuring they will get paid on time, but defense civilians may be furloughed.
This is the first shutdown of the U.S. Government in 17 years.
