Robert Lester makes good on promise to teammate Cam Newton

Robert Lester's memento from his first NFL game ended up in the hands of an unlikely source.

Lester intercepted a pass in the Carolina Panthers 38-0 win over the New York Giants last weekend. The former Alabama Crimson Tide star gave the ball to Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who is a former Auburn Tiger.

"I challenged Lester before the game, setting our differences aside," Newton told Bryan Strickland of Panthers.com. "I told him, 'I'm expecting big things from you.' He said, 'You know what? I'm going to get an interception, and when I get an interception, I'm going to bring it to you.'

"Lo and behold, he got an interception. And what did he do? He brought the ball right to me."

Lester signed with Carolina in April after he wasn't selected in the NFL Draft. He spent the first two game of the season on the Panthers practice squad before injuries gave him an opportunity to start against the Giants.

Lester made five tackles, knocked down a pass and recovered a fumble to go along the interception in his NFL debut.

"I'm trying to prove a point," Lester told Panthers.com. "I've been doubted since I came to the league. I guess they don't think I can play in the league, and I'm here to prove them otherwise. Carolina gave me the opportunity to go out there and show them, and they got many more plays like that coming for them."

The Carolina Panthers are off this week. Their next game is at Arizona on October 6.
