First Walls Go Up on Habitat for Humanity Home in North Tulsa

Posted: Updated:

Saturday, the very first walls went up on a brand new house that the Johnson family will soon call home, thanks to Tulsa Habitat for Humanity.

Javahna Johnson, a mother of four, will soon call a corner lot on North Quaker Avenue, "home." She says her children are already making plans for their new house.

Johnson is getting her hands dirty, along with the dozens of Habitat volunteers, putting in 50 hours of so-called "sweat equity," helping to complete construction of her new house.

Saturday, a wall-raising ceremony was held to commemorate the beginning of the house's main construction phase.

Jane Dunbar with Habitat for Humanity says, the ceremony is an important memory on the site where many more memories will eventually be made. She says, putting a family in a brand new house that they can call their own is what the program is all about.

Receiving a 20 year, zero interest mortgage to repay, Habitat homes provide home ownership to families who may not otherwise be able to buy a house.

"It's just very significant of a new beginning in Javahna Johnson's family life and a new start for them," said Jane Dunbar of Saturday's ceremony.

Johnson's home is expected to be completed in 12 weeks.

The mercury is rising, but the air conditioner at the main Birmingham Public Library is broken. That led the library to reduce hours for at least the next six to eight weeks. The needed repairs are the result of a January cold snap that ruptured the air conditioner coil in the library's main air handler. Parts have been ordered, and repairs will be scheduled once the parts arrive. Starting Monday, April 28, the downtown location at 2100 Park Place will open at 8 a.m. and close at 5 p.m., Mond...More >>
