Youth football team shaves heads in unity for teammate with cancer

WOODLAND - AL -

One East Alabama football team will take the field this weekend with scalps as smooth as their helmets.

The Woodland Bobcats youth players shaved their heads in unity with a teammate battling cancer, 12-year-old Corey Mitchell.

"It's awesome just to look and see how I don't have to go through it alone," Corey said.

"It's just so funny because they're bald and they're acting crazy."

Corey lost his hair last year during cancer treatments.  He was the first in the barber chair this year and had the stylist shave the sides, keeping a little hair on top.

The next batch of kids in line got rid of it all.

"I think it's absolutely amazing," Corey's mother Christy said.

"Last year when Corey first got diagnosed, his teammates all came together and all shaved their heads.  That just kind of started a tradition."

Christy Mitchell said she plans to keep organizing the event every September for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

"We just want to let all kids know that being bald is okay and that no kid fights cancer alone," she said.

The players were enthusiastic, saying they wanted to make sure their friend Corey would not feel alone.

"They're real excited.  They support Corey 100% on what's going on and everything," coach Jonathan Burge said.

"I was real surprised at how they would take to it after the news and everything. Every one of them was up wanting to know what they could do, sending their prayers out.  When it comes to shaving their heads to show their support, they're 100% in for it," Burge said.

"They'll do whatever it takes to keep his spirits up."

Now Corey's ready to get off the sidelines and back in the game.

"What I like about [football] is you get to tackle and you get to throw," he said.

He plays wide receiver and defensive back, and his favorite teams are the Auburn Tigers and the Atlanta Falcons.

The Woodland Bobcats youth team play Saturday against the Ranburne Bulldogs, and the players said they are going to win for Corey.
