PELHAM - AL -

Thursday's meeting at the First Baptist Church of Pelham Annex Building was not about denomination.

It was about brotherhood.

Joining under one roof the Church Safety Conference hosted more than a dozen representatives from different Shelby County Churches. All of them shared one common interest.

"To see if I can help alleviate any problems that might arise," Andy Walton said.

Problems like active shooter situations, protecting your church from theft and protecting your church from money fraud.

"People were requesting this kind of information," Capt. Ken Burchfield said.

Burchfield, who is with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, says with all that has happened, even this week in Washington with the Navy Yard shooting, it's important to be informed.

Walton, who is with the Baptist Church at Lay Lake, agrees.

"In today's world, you never know what you're going to face," he said. "And if we have an opportunity to be prepared, I feel like we need to do that."

The conference does just that.

"It has been very informative," Rodney Brown said.

Brown, with the Greater Miracle Temple Church, says it gives comfort to churches that feel uncomfortable with the unknown.

"I think we are living in a day now that it is very important that we be very conscientious of our environment and churches," he said.
