Christiansen Makes Decision to Not Endorse Bartlett

Posted: Updated:

Officially, he's out of the mayoral race, but you'd never know it.

"I don't believe he has the conservative values that I have," said former candidate Bill Christiansen, taking the somewhat unusual step of announcing a non-endorsement.

"I will not support him, and I will not endorse him," he said.

Why go to the trouble of a non-endorsing Mayor Dewey Bartlett?

"If he hadn't gone after my wife, we probably wouldn't be here today," he said.

Christiansen says he believe the Bartlett campaign was behind a letter to the editor that was critical of his wife's alleged behavior at political luncheon.

"To go after a family member of mine, in public, and say things that were not true, I consider to be reprehensible," he said.

From the Mayor's side, a statement; "The Bartlett campaign would never make a negative comment regarding any family members of any candidate, that's simply bad politics and not what our campaign is about."

But as far as what the Bartlett campaign is about, Christiansen says he met with the mayor earlier this week and asked to hear his platform...

"Well guess what folks, he doesn't have a platform. And I find that totally unacceptable," he said.

Meanwhile, for the other candidate in the race, this is like a gift.

"I believe councilor Christiansen is an honest upstanding person who cares passionately about this city," said Kathy Taylor. She wasn't endorsed by Christiansen, but she wasn't non-endorsed like Bartlett. When asked why Christiansen wasn't endorsing her...

"Uhm, because I'm a Republican," he said.

Which after that press conference, was all but a pat on the back.

"Well I think we agree on a lot of issues and to me that's endorsement enough," said Taylor.

The Bartlett campaign also released the following statement concerning Christiansen; "More voices from the old city council that divided Tulsa, coming back to try to divide Tulsa again. We won't let them. Tulsa is moving in the right direction and we are going forward, not back to the past."
