Lead found, arsenic suspected in soil in Birmingham city park

Posted: Updated:

Another possible hazardous material could be inside in one Birmingham City park.

Field screening results indicated elevated arsenic concentrations in the infield area. Those arsenic samples are being tested in labs by a company contracted by the city. About two weeks ago, crews removed lead-contaminated soil that the Environmental Protection Agency discovered on top of the same spot.

Arsenic is found in soil, and is only dangerous if the amount exceeds higher than average levels.

ABC 33/40 has yet to receive answers from the city of Birmingham regarding the testing.

As for the possibility of lead-contaminated soil in other city parks, the Birmingham city spokesperson says leaders won't comment on pending litigation.
