Empowerment week has officially come to a close, and many people showed up at the railroad park for the closing ceremonies. The ceremonies began around 6:30 in the evening.
Celebrities like American Idol, Taylor hicks performed.
Thousands showed up to celebrate the future and Birmingham's progression since 1963.
Mayor William Bell said they look forward to what's yet to come in Birmingham. "Tomorrow we start building a new Birmingham. Tomorrow you will see a lot of things happen. It's not going to happen overnight. It's going to be a gradual step by step process," said Bell.
The ceremony ended with fireworks around 9:30pm.
