Birmingham man, 25, shot and killed at apartment complex off Valley Avenue

A Birmingham man was killed and another man was injured in an early-morning shooting at an apartment complex off Valley Avenue Saturday, police said.

South Precinct officers responded to a report of a shooting at Sandpiper Apartments located at 737 Barcelona Court around 1:20 a.m. Upon arriving, police found two men suffering from gunshot wounds in a breezeway. Birmingham fire and rescue were called to the scene, where they pronounced 25-year-old Devery Bell deceased. The second victim was transported to UAB Hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery.

According to Sgt. Johnny Williams, a resident and reported shooter told investigators he was involved in an altercation with the two victims prior to the shooting, though, the surviving victim gave a conflicting account of the events leading up to the incident.

Detectives will continue to investigate and are expected to report their findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. At this time, no charges have been filed.
