Rubble smoldering after fire consumes eight blocks of New Jersey boardwalk

Seaside Park, N.J. -

Dawn is revealing the extent of the damage from a wind-whipped fire that devoured eight blocks of boardwalk in two Jersey shore resort towns yesterday.

Smoke is still rising from the ruins of more than 50 businesses as firefighters in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights continue pouring water on hot spots.

Investigators now have the daunting task of determining what sparked the blaze near a frozen custard stand in Seaside Park on Thursday.

Firefighters literally drew a line in the sand and created a fire break to prevent the flames from spreading deep into Seaside Heights.

Officials have already begun estimating the cost to rebuild as Seaside Park officials said it would cost about $600,000 to rebuild their part of the boardwalk.
