Pelham forming new school district, council votes unanimously

Posted: Updated:

In a unanimous vote, members of the Pelham City Council approved the formation of a new school system.  The decision was reached in a meeting Monday night. The system will be separate from Shelby County Public Schools.

Earlier this month, a one cent sales tax increase went into effect to help fund the new school system.  The board also paid a Birmingham company to develop a "pro forma" budget.  In an interview with ABC 33/40's Larry Miller, City Council President Rick Hayes, said he felt Pelham could do a better job of managing its schools and overseeing facility upgrades.
