EXCLUSIVE: Concerns over source of contaminated dirt in Birmingham park

Posted: Updated:

Crews removed lead-contaminated from Birmingham's Maclin Park this week. But there are new concerns over how the dirt may have gotten inside the park's infield in the first place.

Environmental Protection Agency spokesperson James Pinkney tells ABC 33/40 city leaders told the agency a third-party contractor may have placed the dirt in the park. But Pinkney insists only city administrators can discuss details as to how they determined that finding.

ABC 33/40's Marissa Mitchell has more in this exclusive report. Mitchell made numerous attempts to speak with several city leaders regarding the soil removal project as well as whether the contractor has been used at other parks. By 5:30 p.m. Friday, Mitchell received no response.

As for the soil removal, it's part of a series of changes made as the EPA completes its testings in the Harriman Park, Collegeville and Fairmont neighborhoods.
