The memorial for the four girls killed in the1963 bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church begins it's journey to Alabama Wednesday. It will be shipped from Mussi Artworks Foundry in Berkeley, California. The life size bronze and steel sculpture is expected to arrive in Birmingham, and be installed in time for the unveiling, on Saturday, September 14th at 4pm.
The memorial features the four girls at a bench, surrounded by doves. It is nearly 10 feet tall and more than five feet long. It will be assembled on the corner of Sixteenth Street North and Sixth Avenue North at the edge of Kelly Ingram Park.
Artist Elizabeth MacQueen says her sculpture attempts to capture something about each girl based on her research and discussions with family members. She describes the design as full of emotion and movement.
