Travelers Ready for Holiday Weekend

Posted: Updated:

The Labor Day weekend is here.  Not only is it the official start of football season, it's a time for families to get together, cookout and bid farewell to summer.

34 million Americans will be traveling 50 miles or more during the holiday weekend, according to AAA.  That's a 4 percent increase compared to last year; a sign people are feeling more confident about spending money.

"It's very significant increase over last year. So, this will be one of the busiest labor day weekends that we've seen in a few years," said  Clay Ingram, a spokesperson for AAA Alabama.

Gas prices in Alabama are also fueling the travel uptick.  Experts say the lowest gas prices in the state are around $3.19 a gallon.  The are some stations selling gas in Alabama as high as $3.59 a gallon.

Holiday travelers say cheap gas or not, they have no plans of altering their holiday arrangements.

"...you think about it more," said Arnold Jones. "You definitely add it to the cost of what you are going to spend. You're probably spending less because of it when you get to your destination because of what you spend on your fuel."

Ingram says if you won't to save money, consider these tips.

"Take the excess weight out of the car. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Be a sort of conservative driver rather than an aggressive driver. Watch for the cheapest priced gas you can find out there," he said.
