West Nile Virus in west Alabama

TUSCALOOA COUNTY - AL -

The United States Geological Survey is reporting a confirmed case of the West Nile Virus in west Alabama.  Tuscaloosa County has a confirmed report of a human contracting the disease.  That disease is most often spread by a mosquito.

Sherri Davis with the Alabama Department of Public Health says there have been three, total reported cases this year in Alabama.  Two have been within the last month.

Davis says the Tuscaloosa incident was reported on August 18.  She said it is too difficult to pinpoint where the victim contracted the disease because that person had traveled outside of the state.

To avoid the possibility of contracting the West Nile Virus, you can take simple precautions like wearing appropriate clothing and using bug spray when outdoors.  Also, try avoiding peak mosquito hours at dawn and dusk.
