Shelby Co. Sheriff wants more SRO's

COLUMBIANA - AL -

Sheriff Chris Curry is before the county commission pushing for the best school security possible.

Sheriff Curry spoke for almost an hour to the county commission, saying they had a "window of opportunity" to meet the demand and expectation of the county's residents when it comes to public service.

Curry says that right now his office is drastically understaffed and that it cannot continue to do more with less.

He told the commission that school security is a top priority for his office and that he wants funding for more school resource officers.

Cindy Warner with Shelby County Schools believes the partnership with the sheriff's office
is crucial to the system's Safe Schools Initiative.

"(Curry) wanted to see the schools be very safe and we feel like he has done his part in helping to make that happen," says Warner.

The initiative features a five point plan that centers on security and safety. Including a collaboration with local law enforcement.

"We feel like it has been very well thought out," says Warner. "We think it is a model initiative to show local cooperation, coming together and making sure that something as important as school safety was addressed."

Warner knows the effort it takes to place an SRO in each school.

"(Law enforcement agencies) are graciously providing them to come to our schools, but we have to work with them to make sure what's being planned also works for them," Warner says.

Some of the other major issues Curry referenced was the heroin abuse epidemic that has spread through Shelby County. Also, the aging senior population who fall victim to abuse and crimes.

He says without adequate resources his office will not be able to effectively deal with these issues.
