Famous Capri, ASU to host film festival in Montgomery

A film festival will be free and open to everyone in Montgomery later this month. Montgomery's Black Film Festival will be held at the Capri & ASU, Aug. 23 & 24, 2014.  Eight films will be shown at the famous Capri and at ASU's Hardy Student Center's Theater.  The National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture at Alabama State University will host this 11th annual festival.

A total of eight films will be featured.  Here is a look at the schedule.

Location: ASU's Hardy Student Center Theater on campus
Time: 6 - 9:30 p.m.

  • "FunkJazz Kafé: The Diary of A Decade (The Story of A Movement)"
  • "The Bama State Collegians (ASU'S Legendary Jazz Ensemble)"
  • Post-Film Discussion led by Dr. William Ashbourne, assistant professor of Music Business, ASU

*Free Refreshments (popcorn and soda) will be available to first 100 guests at the Capri Theatre.

  • 9 a.m. - 10:25 a.m.  "The Jackie Robinson Story" (Not rated) 
Starring Jackie Robinson in the title role, this 1950 biopic traces Robinson's career in the Negro Leagues and his historic debut as the first black major league baseball player of the 20th century.

  • 10:30 a.m. - 12:05 p.m.  "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (PG-13)
The story of a heroic six year-old girl and her quest to find her mother amid a storm that threatens her town's existence. Quvenzhané Wallis' became the youngest nominee for Best Actress in a Leading Role in Academy Awards history for her stellar performance as Hushpuppy.

  • 12:10 p.m. - 2:25 p.m. "42" (PG-13)
Jackie Robinson's number 42 jersey is as revered today as it was reviled in 1946 when Branch Rickey recruited him to break Major League Baseball's color line with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

  • 2:30 p.m. - 5:20 p.m.  "Django Unchained" (R)
With the assistance of a German bounty hunter, a former slave sets out to rescue his wife from a cruel plantation owner. A Quentin Tarantino film starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson. Post-film discussion led by Dr. Howard Robinson II, Archivist, Alabama State University.
  • 5:25 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.  "FunkJazz Kafé: The Diary of a Decade (The Story of a Movement)" (Not rated) 
A riveting documentary that explores the evolution of Atlanta's FunkJazz Kafé Arts and Music Festival from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, while examining the roots of soul music and its challenges within the mainstream music industry. Special appearances by Erykah Badu, Cee Lo Green, Chuck D, Cornel West and more. Post-film discussion led by Jason Orr, the film's producer, writer and director.

  • 7:45 p.m. - 8:55 p.m.  "Soul Food Junkies" (Not rated)
Byron Hurt explores the soul food tradition in the black family, related health issues and the cultural politics of food in this insightful documentary. Post-film discussion led by Isaiah Sankey, registered nurse practitioner and owner of Isaiah's Restaurant.
