Alabama's Bobby Wyatt advances at U.S. Amateur Championship

Posted: Updated:

Alabama's Bobby Wyatt made quick work of his opponent at the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Wyatt beat Rico Hoey of Rancho Cucamaunga, Calif., 4&3 to advance to the next round. Wyatt is paired with Gavin Hall in the second round.

If Wyatt beats Hall, he will be in action again on Thursday afternoon.

"It's just one step closer," Wyatt told AL.com. "I wouldn't call it a relief or anything like that. You're just a little bit closer to your final goal. The key is just taking one match at a time, one hole at a time and do what you need to do and play the best you can."

The opening round of match play was not as kind to Birmingham's Stewart Jolly, who was eliminated in a playoff against Scottie Scheffler. Jolly lost on the second playoff hole.

The U.S. Amateur Championship will fit in two rounds of play on Thursday. Quarterfinal action will be held on Friday, with the semifinals played on Saturday and the championship match on Sunday.
