MONTGOMERY-AL -

Authorities evacuated the Attorney General's office in Montgomery Wednesday morning and set up a one block perimeter around the building.

Capt. Mark Williams with the Montgomery Fire Department said a secretary opened an envelope that contained a suspicious white substance.  Several different agencies responded to the scene.

We're told six people were exposed to the substance and were decontaminated at a portable tent sent up by a hazmat team.  Attorney General Luther Strange was not one of those who were exposed.

U.S. Postal Inspectors tested the substance and their initial findings showed the substance is not harmful.  However, a special military team is being called in to do secondary testing to confirm the original results.

Late this afternoon, Strange released the following statement regarding the evacuation:

"Our employees are all safe, and for that I am most thankful. The Attorney General's Office is working with state and federal authorities to investigate the source of the letter received today. I want to commend the first responders, firefighters, medics and law enforcement personnel for their rapid response, assistance and professionalism."

The building will remain closed until the final results are available. Employees were sent home for the remainder of the day.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident.
