Lightning may have sparked church fire

TUSCALOOSA - AL -

Unity Baptist Church caught fire late Monday night.  Tuscaloosa Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Quinton Brown says he believes lightning started the fire.  Right now, they think lightning struck the roof of the church.  The flames spread from the roof and steeple.  Eventually, the roof collapsed on the sanctuary.  It is said to be a complete loss.

Church leaders could find out later Tuesday if they can salvage the educational building.  So far, there is no word on where church services will be held.

This fire destroyed a lot of the hard work the congregation had given.  Pastor Gene Dockery says members had painted, installed new carpet and even padded the pews.  He says, however, "we're not sad that it's gone so to speak, because it's going to get better."  Dockery says they will look at this loss as an opportunity to grow.

A lot of the congregation rushed out to the church when they heard it was burning.  They gathered to support one another.
