Auburn has eliminated one of it's contenders to be starting quarterback.

Kiehl Frazier will change positions and play safety. Coach Gus Malzahn says the player suggested the move.

"As we were talking to Kiehl Frazier and told him the plan, he brought up the idea that, 'Coach, I want to help the team anyway I can,'" Malzahn said. "We talked (Saturday) and came back the next day and Kiehl moved to safety today."

Frazier played safety, in addition to quarterback, in high school. He was wearing No. 25 at practice on Monday.

"I'll be able to help the team at safety--that will be my focus 100 percent," Frazier said. "Something I'm fully going to embrace."

Frazier was the starting quarterback to begin last season, but he struggled as the Tigers got off to a 1-7 start. He was replaced as starting quarterback after five games.

"I didn't play well last year, and that's something that's kind of set in stone. I can't change that now," Frazier said. "This will be best for me and the team for me to move to safety."

Malzahn also said that junior college transfer Nick Marshall and freshman Jeremy Johnson will get the majority of the practice reps this week.
