BARCELONA, Spain -- The University of Alabama continues to make a splash at the 2013 FINA World Championships currently being held in Barcelona, Spain. Senior-to-be Kristel Vourna, representing her native Greece, turned in a time of one minute and 33-hundredths of a second in the 100-meter butterfly to take 27th place on day one of the pool competition.

Vourna, who finished 12th in the 100m butterfly at last summer's London Olympics, spent a good portion of the 2012-13 collegiate season recovering from illness and injury. She will compete in the 50m butterfly later in the championships, an event in which she nearly broke own national record earlier this summer.

Alabama's World Championship run opened with incoming freshman Bonnie Macdonald finishing 14th in the 5-kilometer open water event Moll de la Fusta Harbor.

In addition to Vourna's upcoming swim in the 50m butterfly, incoming Crimson Tide rookies Anton Mckee and Kristian Gkolomeev are also set to compete later in the week at the Palau Sant Jordi complex which was home to the swimming events at the 1992 Olympics. Mckee, from Iceland, will compete in the 400m individual medley while Gkolomeev, from Greece, is set to swim the 50m freestyle.

Like Vourna, Mckee and Gkolomeev are also veterans of the 2012 London Olympiad.
