Winfield-AL -

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer involved fatal shooting in Winfield.

It happened this afternoon after a three hour search for a suspect who allegedly ran from police.

Marion County Sheriff, Kevin Williams tells ABC 33/40 that around 11:30 am Monday morning Winfield officers arrived to check out a suspicious person in a car near the Hampton Inn hotel on Highway 129.

Police say an African Male exited the vehicle but quickly ran and lead police on a foot chase into a wooded area nearby.

Williams say the suspect was armed and they later discovered stolen gun in the vehicle that was also reported stolen.

Williams says officers on the foot chase retreated and called for backup.  They believed the suspect was surrounded and resumed the manhunt after backup officers and helicopter for aerial vision arrived.

Williams says when the suspect was relocated, he allegedly fired shots and officers returned fire striking the suspect and killing him.

The suspects name has not released because ABI is investigating the case.
