Two men, the estranged husband and stepson of a 41-year-old woman found dead Sunday night in Cullman County, have been charged with murder, Sheriff Mike Rainey said today.

The victim's husband, Terry Mikel, 45, and her stepson, Charles Christopher Burks, 25, were arrested in a densely-wooded area near Hanceville around 10:27 p.m. after an intense search by law enforcement, including an Alabama State Trooper helicopter and a K9 unit. The pilots were able to direct Cullman Co. sheriff's deputies to the suspects with the use of Forward Looking Infrared Radar.

The two men are believed to have killed Angela Annette Mikel, who was found dead from an apparent shooting five hours earlier at an abandoned residence located at 1995 County Road 38.

Just days prior to her death, Mikel had filed for a protection from abuse order against her husband, who she had separated from due to domestic violence abuse.

Following their arrests, investigators were able to gather enough information to charge both men with murder. Evidence collected at the crime scene includes the possible murder weapon, a small-caliber gun.

The case is being reviewed by Cullman Co. District Attorney Wilson Blaylock.

Bond has not been set for the suspects.

"I want to thank Cullman County Investigators and deputies, Hanceville Police Department and the Alabama State Trooper helicopter pilots; Tim Martin and Mike Manley for their outstanding efforts," Rainey said in a release.
