FBI: 3 children recovered, 2 pimps arrested in Birmingham during nationwide operation targeting underage prostitution

Posted: Updated:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation today announced the recovery of 105 children and the arrests of 105 pimps in a nationwide operation targeting underage prostitution.

According to a release, three juveniles between the ages of 13 and 17 were recovered and two pimps were arrested in Birmingham.

The FBI's local, state and federal law enforcement partners teamed with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in conducting the operation called Operation Cross Country VII over a three-day period in 76 cities across the country.

"Child prostitution remains a persistent threat to children across America," said Ron Hosko, assistant director of the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division. "This operation serves as a reminder that these abhorrent crimes can happen anywhere, and the FBI remains committed to stopping this cycle of victimization and holding the criminals who profit from this exploitation accountable."

Targeted locations in the various cities included truck stops, casinos, street "tracks" and websites advertising dating or escort services.

"Operation Cross Country demonstrates just how many of America's children are being sold for sex every day, many on the Internet," said John Ryan, CEO of NCMEC. "We're honored and proud to partner with the FBI, which has taken the lead in tackling this escalating problem."

Following the latest operation, the FBI and its partners have recovered more than 2,700 children from the streets. There have been a total of 1,350 convictions as a result of all operations to date, including 10 life-term prison sentences and the seizure of more than $3.1 million in assets.

The names of those arrested in Birmingham have not been released.
